I am surrounded
in the magpie’s surroundsound—
quadrophonic sounds:
squawks, squeaks and shrieks resounding;
meadow’s alarm is sounded

#2 Taos Fetish Carving

I write in turquoise
words from noontime turquoise—
Millicent’s turquoise,
Zuni-bear  turquoise, turquoise
in lines scrimshawed in turquoise.

#3  Taos Anomoly

I occupy clouds
the wispy-fleecy noonclouds,
New Mexican clouds—
crab   turtle   whale clouds—
in the desert, head in clouds.


A nine-time Pushcart-Prize nominee and National Park Artist-in-Residence, Karla Linn Merrifield has had over 500 poems appear in dozens of journals and anthologies.
