Mary Hanrahan

Fourth Planet from the Sun

By Mary Hanrahan

The horse knows

where to test the fence

                          looking to break free

Raindrops

as a daughter dreams

                               longing to be free

The loneliest people

have no one to be lonely for

                               no one to set free

The places we will travel

burning bridges

                              wanting to be free

One last cup of coffee

as she drives away

                            knowing she is free

There are no animals on Mars

only dust devils

                                       whirling free

I used to live there   Mary says

pointing to the pale blue dot

and smiling because

                                          she is free
