GHAZAL SPIRIT

Gene Doty

Can we write poems in English with true ghazal spirit?
Or will efforts to keep the form pure muzzle spirit?

Afternoons of gazing at blank windows in school,
Listening to voices drone, befuddle spirit.

Nights of a full moon, of the milky way, seen from
A Kansas hilltop, nights of brilliance, dazzle spirit.

Out of Balkh and Konya, out of Persia, from the wild inns
Of Shiraz, come words made in patterns to puzzle spirit.

Hey, Gino! keep on weaving these crude carpets
Of American words--but you'll only frazzle spirit.
